<br />
I introduced our theme for 2015 on Sunday Night: Authentic.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcarDG5y6Cq8MXA3fGYZf4VhtschYQOTdeJktBMzKkm1riXhRMuWv4RQNUTOW6svFoNEiMrEYQKUUfy7tj06HPAyCViosel8b7b4_lylHuMswaPoAHPAwKyUmGws_iD2XzWvBO4Wzibos/s1600/Authentic_Momentum2015.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcarDG5y6Cq8MXA3fGYZf4VhtschYQOTdeJktBMzKkm1riXhRMuWv4RQNUTOW6svFoNEiMrEYQKUUfy7tj06HPAyCViosel8b7b4_lylHuMswaPoAHPAwKyUmGws_iD2XzWvBO4Wzibos/s1600/Authentic_Momentum2015.png" height="141" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We spent our time together on Sunday night defining the word <i>Authentic</i> and how we pursue it. I laid out the following 4 questions as we begin to shape this vision:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
What does authentic look like?<br />How do I authentically love God?<br />How do I authentically love others?<br />How do I continually assess this?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We live in a world of FAKE. A lot of people<i> talk</i> about loving God. A lot of people <i>talk</i> about loving others. So, in the midst of that, what would be the greatest difference people can see in us? The answer: authenticity.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>So, how can <i>authentic</i> be defined? From dictionary.com we find the following definitions...</li>
<li>Not false or copied; genuine; real</li>
<li>Entitled to acceptance or belief because of agreement with known facts or experience; reliable; trustworthy</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Experience is an interesting word there. We talked 2 weeks ago about the difference between knowing things about God and actually knowing God. What is the difference between the 2? Experience. Do we know things about God, or have we experienced him? The difference will have everything to do with how authentic our love for and relationship with him will be!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We walked through Paul's prayer for the Colossian church found in Colossians 1:9-14. Notice Paul's central prayer found in verse 9:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
"...asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding..."</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Paul is praying primarily for the believers there to know God through experience. He is praying that they would not only know God, but grow in the knowledge of his will, or the grand story of God through history, of which we are a part! Only when we come to know God in that way will we then "walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him..." Paul then prays 4 implications that will be the byproduct of growing in such knowledge that will work its way out in the outward expression of our lives.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>A life that bears fruit (v. 10b)</li>
<li>A life that increases in knowledge (v. 10c)</li>
<li>A life that grows in the strength of the Lord (v. 11)</li>
<li>A life of deep gratitude based in hope & our reality in Christ (v. 12-14)</li>
</ol>
Simply put, when we authentically seek God, we will grow in authenticity in the outward expression of our lives.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We closed by reading through 2 Corinthians 2:14-17 together. From that passage we were challenged to be people who (1) spread the fragrance of his knowledge, (2) are the aroma of Christ, (3) offer authenticity in the midst of "peddlers."</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I closed by offering the following 4 questions for reflection over the next week:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>On a scale of 1-10, how authentic would you say your love for God is right now?</li>
<li>What is the first step you could take to begin to move that number?</li>
<li>What would it look like for you to be the aroma of Christ among those in your circle of influence?</li>
<li>Are you offering an authentic alternative in a world full of "peddlers?"</li>
</ol>
PARENTS: Ask your students what stood out to them from our time in the Word together. Ask them how they are processing through those questions for reflection.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">

But it's all good. I've been trying to figure out some way to save families money...I know many of you have a student or even multiple students who have signed up for multiple big events for 2015. I know that can get costly very quickly. SL Conference this year is closer (Charlotte) than it was last year (Atlanta). Staying 2 nights last year made sense due to the distance we had to travel to get home. However, it doesn't make as much sense this year. So I have decided to just stay one night (Friday the 13th, not the movie). I am also going to take food out of the overall event cost and just let each student take care of the meals, themselves. This is going to be huge for your pocketbooks! This brings the total cost of what you will pay to the church down from $120 to $70. This will cover the conference fee and lodging. The only thing left will be food for the weekend, which I will lay out soon so you can be planning. If you have already paid more than $70 for this trip, we will be glad to move your overage to another trip or simply reimburse the remainder. Just let us know. We should now plan to return home on the 14th by around 9:30pm.<br />
<br />
ALSO...<br />
<br />
(2) We sent in our down payment for camp (FUGE - North Greenville University - June 15-20) today. We *may* have a spot or 2 open if you would still like to go. It looks like right now the students who will be going are the following:<br />
Grace R.<br />
Isaiah R.<br />
Michael G.<br />
Alex C.<br />
Brandon Y.<br />
Nikolay C.<br />
Bryce G.<br />
Matthew W.<br />
Joshua W.<br />
If you feel you should be on this list and don't see your name, please let me know ASAP!!! As in by tomorrow. If you would like to be added and go, you MUST let me know by tomorrow.<br />
<br />
If you have any questions about any of this, please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks!!Momentum Student Ministryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02894973050592034351noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5508521597013772518.post-61565486653460145782014-12-09T07:58:00.003-08:002014-12-09T08:03:59.202-08:00Parents Meeting Info (From 12/7/14 Meeting)<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: 16pt;">In case you</span><b style="font-size: 16pt;"> </b><span style="font-size: 16pt;">couldn't make the parents meeting this past Sunday night, here is the information I passed out. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: 21px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: 21px;">You</span><span style="font-size: 16pt;"> will notice that a BIG change has occurred in our Canada trip with the date. We will also not be leading a baseball camp this year. This was per Ron's request. They are simply condensing what has been 3 weeks of sports camps during the summer down to 2. This has resulted in baseball camp being cut. So, instead, this year we will be </span><span style="font-size: 21px;">traveling</span><span style="font-size: 16pt;"> there in April to participate/lead in a retreat with the students there. We are also looking at offering an evangelistic outreach to other students in Rawdon while we are there. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: 16pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: 16pt;"><i>A couple of important notes:</i></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: 21px;">* Students may sign up on the back wall of the student room, but are NOT officially signed up to participate until they have paid a down payment or have had a conversation with me in which we work out alternative payment plans.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: 21px;">* In an effort to be more precise with payments coming in for events, we are asking that all payments be made on Sunday nights. I would prefer parents bring that payment up (preferably between 7:45-8pm). All money collected on Sunday nights will be documented and turned in to Jennifer the next morning. She will keep a list of all monies turned in so that we can all confidently be on the same page.</span></div>

<br />
I am still trying to get back on my feet after being gone practically all of July! As I have been known to do, I printed one time on our schedule and then announced a different time last night. I apologize for that. So, let me just completely change plans on you again, just for good measure! ;) <br />
<br />
WE WILL MEET HERE AT WESTWOOD TOMORROW AT 3:00pm.<br />
<br />
We will plan to be here until about 5. We will NOT cookout or provide supper, but will have some snack stuff. We will have fun with some water games at 3. We will enjoy some snacks and then play some volleyball in the gym after that. So, there is the plan!<br />
<br />
If you would be willing, I could use some help getting some water balloons filled up. If you would help with that, plan to come at 2 and comment below to let me know you are coming.<br />
<br />
Thanks!Momentum Student Ministryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02894973050592034351noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5508521597013772518.post-22935279418777985592014-07-25T07:21:00.001-07:002014-07-25T07:21:20.716-07:00Final Camp InfoAlright students and parents. The time has come. We leave for camp on Monday! Here is (hopefully) all the information you will need.<br />
<br />
First, here is a link to a checklist for what to bring and what not to bring, as well as some information on how you (parents) can participate in camp while your student is there!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://studentlife.com/sms/uploaded/files/2014%20Camp%20Prep%20Center/Original/YouthParentFlyer2.pdf">http://studentlife.com/sms/uploaded/files/2014%20Camp%20Prep%20Center/Original/YouthParentFlyer2.pdf</a><br />
<br />
PLEASE pack as lightly as possible. Our space is limited.<br />
<br />
The biggest difference to the information on that link is that you do NOT need to bring bed linens. They will be provided. You will, however, need to pack a towel and wash cloth.<br />
<br />
Also, although they allow tank tops to be worn that have at least 3-inch straps, I do NOT allow any tank tops. All shirts need to have sleeves.<br />
<br />
Students are welcome to bring extra spending money, but they will need to be responsible for it. There are snacks and souvenirs available at Ridgecrest for purchase.<br />
<br />
Students may bring phones, but again, they will be responsible for them. They will NOT be allowed to carry them to their activity stations during the day or to worship times.<br />
<br />
As for schedule...<br />
<br />
We will meet at Westwood on Monday at 8:45 with a goal to depart by 9am. We will stop for lunch, so everyone needs to bring money for that. <br />
<br />
We will wrap up on Friday at 10am. After stopping again for lunch on the way back, we should return by 2:30 or 3pm.<br />
<br />
A copy of our daily schedule can be found here:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://studentlife.com/events/3069/original-camp-schedule">http://studentlife.com/events/3069/original-camp-schedule</a><br />
<br />
You can also listen live to our worship times, as well as find your student, send emails to them and purchase gift certificates at <a href="http://studentlife.com/events/camp">studentlife.com/events/camp</a><br />
<br />
DO NOT FORGET TO BRING YOUR STUDENT'S PERMISSION FORM. IT MUST BE SIGNED AND NOTARIZED.<br />
<br />
If you have any other questions, please text me with them at 336.583.5375 or email me at <a href="mailto:momentumsp@gmail.com">momentumsp@gmail.com</a>. I will probably answer those on our Facebook page for everyone's benefit, unless they are personal.<br />
<br />
Thanks so much! Please be praying in advance for our group!Momentum Student Ministryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02894973050592034351noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5508521597013772518.post-4101242518885714592014-07-11T19:53:00.003-07:002014-07-11T19:53:57.900-07:00Canada Update #5Well, Friday has come and gone, and we are here at Ron's waiting for midnight to roll around so we can begin our trip home. Today was a great close to our camp. JT shared during our devotion time, and he used my gospel glove to walk the kids through the gospel story (using the colors).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJbanH7s4WrZJ-Ugf0EAONPuYrpwemzQ33pUCVnfZZe-YoFlV3N1w1hIj48A6TMwKNRckDsQQ39m_NqUzXczkNxsai9X7aqJX62U7zGFV1TKDddXK8UQo8gCQaJ5HNUcWBYEZBlA7amhw/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJbanH7s4WrZJ-Ugf0EAONPuYrpwemzQ33pUCVnfZZe-YoFlV3N1w1hIj48A6TMwKNRckDsQQ39m_NqUzXczkNxsai9X7aqJX62U7zGFV1TKDddXK8UQo8gCQaJ5HNUcWBYEZBlA7amhw/s1600/photo+1.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
During the cookout, MANY parents stayed, which is always a huge answer to prayer. A guy loosely associated with Ron's church shared the gospel through his unique ministry of chalk art and storying. Pray that the seeds planted during that time would result in further conversations and ministry opportunities!<br />
<br />
This evening, our team spent some time in the village. We shopped a little, and then some of the local kids treated us to a very traditional Quebecois supper! ;)<br />

<br />
We then spent some time walking and fellowshipping together through the town. We did some shopping in Dollarama, and now we are ready to come home!<br />

The night included hockey and water balloons! The hockey game featured the U.S. vs Canada, with the Canadian team winning 3-1. Not too bad, I suppose. Ron's 2 interns from Texas shared some from 2 Cor. 5 and did a wonderful job.</span></div><div>

The weather was beautiful today for day 4 of camp. Gabrielle shared during the devotion time. I am really proud of her for stepping out of her comfort zone. I am also proud of her for sharing something that included painful memories. She shared about Jesse Hourigan's battle with cancer, as well as his spiritual journey through that time. Our plans changed for the afternoon, so we decided to serve Ron by stacking his large pile of firewood. Afterward we drove just out of town to Bible school here, called Capenwray. It is a beautiful campus. We threw football and frisbee, and then spent some time canoeing at the small lake there. We enjoyed the relaxation and fellowship! As we left, we spent some time praying for the head of the school, Matt, his family, and the ministry of the school.</div>

We are looking forward to our last day of camp tomorrow. Please pray as the gospel will be shared with many people, including most of the parents who will come and join us for our noon barbecue. </div>

But despite the wind, we are celebrating 2 birthdays today on our team. Darcy (one of the students from the local church here) treated them with ice cream after their lunch.<br />

Bonne Fete, Xachory and JT! We will celebrate officially a little later, and even have some fun with water balloons with Ron's students tonight!<br />
<br />
Yesterday we spent some time in St. Julienne again, this time passing out free water bottles to passers-by. The bottles had information about the Bible study that Serge desires to start there. The team gave out 300 water bottles in a little over an hour. Pray that those bottles will result in some phone calls, interest in the Bible study, and ultimately, new believers!<br />

Madeline shared in the devotion time at today's camp and did an awesome job! The translation was interesting, to say the least. Madeline met another Spanish speaker here whose daughter is a part of the camp. She is not a believer, but Madeline asked her if she would translate from Spanish to French today as she shared. She agreed! So, Madeline spoke in Spanish, which was then translated to French, which another man then translated into English! Madeline accidentally spoke in English once, and the guy who was translating into English spoke in French a couple of times! The point got across, though, and the kids all listened closely to the truth. Madeline has shared some with her Spanish-speaking friend, and hopes to share more with her before the close of our week.<br />

Tonight we are participating in Ron's students ministry meeting. Thanks for continuing to pray. There have already been some really wonderful conversations with adults who have stuck around the camp. We are praying for even more!Momentum Student Ministryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02894973050592034351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5508521597013772518.post-73425229347101327422014-07-07T18:00:00.000-07:002014-07-07T18:00:57.982-07:00Canada Update #2Despite the rainy weather, we decided to ride the short drive to St. Julienne. This is the small town close by where Ron's church is currently to help plant a church. The hope is to begin a Bible study initially. A gentleman from the church named Serge will lead this effort. St. Julienne is his home and he knows many people there. Below is a picture of the building that he hopes to meet in, at least at first. He has volunteered there for a while now, driving folks to dr. appointments. He is optimistic that because of this service, they will allow him to use the building for this ministry rent-free! Will you please pray for that to happen?<br />

The town of St. Julienne is hard-core Catholic, and almost zero English-speaking. It will be a VERY difficult place to evangelize and plant a church. Below a picture of the Catholic church there.<br />

As you can tell, seeing this beautiful church was a real treat for us! But it also offered us a sad reality of the pervasive lostness of this area. The caretaker that let us tour the building was such a sweet guy, but his words painted a sober reality of the state of mind of most people here. He shared with us the reason for being so open to us coming in and looking around had to do with his longing to see young people return 'to the church.' He said that this beautiful building should be shared, and that if the doors were open, perhaps they would return. He then said that "everyone just needs to believe in something, whatever it is, as long as it was something." Ron had the opportunity to share a very frustrating conversation with him, trying to speak truth into his life. Please pray for Clarence. Pray that God would open his eyes to truth, and that he would come to understand that Jesus is the only way for all people to the Father.</div>

We had a great time of debriefing tonight after dinner. We shared about worshiping together in different languages yesterday, our first (rainy) day of camp, and our time in St. Julienne this afternoon. We are suppose to have sunny days the rest of the week, so we are excited about that! Thanks for continuing to pray for us!</div>

<br />
(1) Thomas and Katie have had to re-schedule our Worship at the Lake. We were suppose to meet out there this Sunday, but will now instead meet AT THE CHURCH at NORMAL TIME. You can come as early as 5:30, if you'd like. We will wrap up at 8pm.<br />
<br />
(2) Canada Team will meet at 5:30 for about 30 minutes. We will go over some baseball fundamentals we will teach at the camp. Bring your glove, if you have one.<br />
<br />
(3) I presented an opportunity to you for us to go deeper in our partnership with Ron in Canada. I would like to hear from you this Sunday how you feel the Lord leading you in that area. Are you willing to participate? How much do you feel you can give on a monthly basis for a year? I will ask you all to write that down privately and give it to me to read and assess on Sunday night. Take another opportunity to talk to your parents and be prepared to answer those questions Sunday. I will make a decision on what we will commit to do, if anything, the following week.<br />
<br />
See you Sunday!Momentum Student Ministryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02894973050592034351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5508521597013772518.post-78970398611119345122014-06-13T11:42:00.002-07:002014-06-13T11:43:19.161-07:00Movie Night Tonight! I love Student Life Conference mostly because I have truly seen students leave it in the past changed. I believe this to be the case because this conference tends to focus so much on God's Word. So, please join with me in praying for our students and leaders as we travel to Atlanta together!</span></div><div><br></div><div><b>Cost Information</b></div><div>Just about everyone has paid at least the initial $40 down payment. If that is the case for you, your remaining balance will be $75. It would be great if you can pay that prior to our departure. You can even do that as you drop your student off that morning. However, the remaining money will go to reimburse the church for expenses paid during that weekend. So, if you cannot pay all or any of that by the time we leave, we just need to make sure to get it in, if possible, in the 2 weeks following the weekend.</div><div><br></div><div>As stated before, that cost covers everyone's meals while we are at the event. Students need to bring extra money for eating while we travel. That includes lunch/dinner on Friday and lunch on Sunday. We will be back home before dinner on Sunday.</div><div><br></div><div>Apart from money for those meals, students should not NEED any more spending money. However, they are free to bring more for souvenirs and snacks. I will leave that to your discretion as parents, but students will be responsible for keeping up with their money and budgeting it in order to have enough for lunch on our return trip home.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Schedule Information</b></div><div>We will plan to meet at the church at 9am on Friday (14th). This means, as I have already indicated, that students will need to plan to miss that day of school. I would like to leave the church at around 9:20. Leaving this early allows us enough time to stop for 2 meals and arrive by the 5:30 registration time.</div><div><br></div><div>We will leave sometime before lunch on Sunday. We will shoot to arrive back at the church between 4 and 5pm, but we will allow students to call home when we are about 30 minutes from arriving.</div><div><br></div><div>You can see the schedule for the weekend, if you would like, by clicking this link: http://studentlife.com/events/3092/conference-schedule</div><div style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></div><div><b style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">What to Bring</b></div><div>Bible and pen/pencil (Students will receive a conference booklet with space to take notes, but they can bring their own journal if they desire)</div><div><br></div><div>Great, flexible attitudes!</div><div><br></div><div>The conference will be casual, so t-shirts are fine, but please NO tank tops. Students may wear shorts (if the weather permits), but they must be modest in length. As always, I am the judge and jury for what passes for <i>modest</i>. :)</div><div><br></div><div>Students will need to bring toiletries, but will not need to bring sheets or towels. They can bring a pillow, if they want, but will not necessarily need to.</div><div><br></div><div>They can bring snacks/drinks for their travel and room, but please understand space is limited. If we run out of room, these will be the first items to leave behind.</div><div><br></div><div>No pocket knives, lighters, etc...</div><div><br></div><div>If your students require medication, I will be glad to keep that with me and regulate its distribution. Just let me know.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Portable Electronic Devices</b></div><div>I have done quite a bit of oscillating on this issue over the past couple of years. I have provided different rules for different circumstances during that time, which I believe to be OK. Situations differ, and as I pray through this issue, sometimes my stance differs for different reasons. Let me explain my heart for this specific trip.</div><div><br></div><div>More than anything, I want for our students to experience revival, and even initial spiritual awakening, at this conference. I can't think of any greater hindrance to that than these devices. Our students are inundated with their use in almost every area of life. Sometimes we need a break from them so that we can concentrate on each other and what God is speaking through His Word. For this reason, I have decided to disallow students from bringing any of these devices on this trip. This includes cell phones/smart phones/ipods or MP3 players/laptops/tablets. I want our students to grow in fellowship with each other, not zone out to an autonomous, non-social state through the aid of ear phones. I want our students to be able to fully concentrate on God speaking to them through His Word, not wondering if they have a new text message or facebook message waiting for them in their pockets. I want students to spend some time this weekend in introspection and confession/repentance, not fighting temptation to satisfy a sinful desire through the portable internet device in their hand.</div><div><br></div><div>As always, I will have my phone on and with me at all times. I will not, however, answer every call, especially if one comes in the middle of a session. But, I will be listening to messages and returning calls as soon as I can. <b>If you have an emergency and need to speak to me or your student quickly, the best way to notify me will be through text message or email.</b> I will have my phone out in order to see any such message that comes through.</div><div><br></div><div><b><i>If you do not have it already, my number is <a href="tel:336.583.5375" x-apple-data-detectors="true" x-apple-data-detectors-type="telephone" x-apple-data-detectors-result="1">336.583.5375</a>.</i></b></div><div><br></div><div>If you would like for your student to check in with you throughout the weekend, just let me know how you would like for that to happen. Students may use my phone or another leader's phone to do so on the schedule you prefer.</div><div><br></div><div>If you have a unique circumstance in which I may need to allow a concession to this rule, please contact me and we can chat about it. I am always willing to make an exception, if a special need dictates one necessary. If you have any questions of concerns about this, please do not hesitate to bring it up.</div><div><br></div><div><b>Wrap Up</b></div><div>Thanks so much for allowing your student to come and be a part of this trip! Again, please be praying for us as we go. I would not be surprised if I have failed to answer a question you may have. If that is the case, do not hesitate to let me know and I will do my best to answer it! I'm looking forward to a great time at the conference!</div>Momentum Student Ministryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02894973050592034351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5508521597013772518.post-7790420499451259052014-01-27T10:59:00.000-08:002014-01-27T10:59:06.234-08:00VERY important SUMMER CAMP updateI reminded the students about last night being the deadline for signing up for summer camp. As it stands today, we only have 7 guys and one girl signed up to go. This is the list I have currently:<br /><br />Xachory Chapman <br />Nikolay Clayton <br />Michael Gray<br />Josh Sharpe <br />Hannah Sharpe <br />Joshua Welch <br />Matthew Welch <br />Brandon Yocum <br /><br />I have become aware this morning, though, that apparently some were confused between camp and conference. Last night was the deadline to sign up for SUMMER CAMP. That is Student Life Camp, set to take place July 28 - August 1 at Ridgecrest. The down payment is $50, and the total cost is $285.<br /><br />Here is the deal. Westwood has to pay our down payment (which is non-refundable) within the next 2 days. That is why the deadline was set for last night. So, I will give everyone 1 more opportunity to sign up. I HAVE TO KNOW BY THE END OF TODAY (MONDAY), though. After tonight, this event will be closed. <br /><br />If your name is not on the above list, you must contact me by the end of the day in order to secure a spot. You can respond here, by texting/calling me, or by email. We still need the down payment, though, ASAP. So, you need to plan to bring it by the office sometime this week or put it in the plate on Sunday at the latest. If you have a financial issue, I still MUST here from you by the end of today to secure a spot.<br /><br />Thanks.Momentum Student Ministryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02894973050592034351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5508521597013772518.post-4496573853800855662014-01-20T08:36:00.003-08:002014-01-20T08:36:58.556-08:00Student Life Conference Update (Lodging)We have finalized our plans for lodging while attending the upcoming Student Life Conference. I realize that everything I place in students' hands does not necessarily always end up in parents' hands! ;) So, I have copied and pasted that information below for you to have. Probably the most important date is our upcoming parents meeting, which will take place in The Well (new student ministry room) on Sunday, January 12th. Please try to make this meeting as we will be offering more details and covering any questions you may have. As always, feel free to contact me before that meeting if you feel the need! I have also updated the camp information (as it stands now).<br />

Because of several things, we are not going to do a 'full-blown' D-Now retreat. Instead, here is the new plan.<div><br></div><div>We will take students to the Person football game on Friday evening against Northern Durham. Students will need money for admission to the game, and money for concessions, if they wish. $10-$15 should be plenty. Meet at the church at 5:30pm.</div><div><br></div><div>We will all go back to the church after the game and spend the night at the church. Students will need to bring sleeping bags, pillows, air mattresses, etc...we will plan to have a late night, with time in the gym, games, and perhaps a movie. *ladies: please bring appropriate sleep attire!! *parents: of course, guys and girls will be sleeping in very removed spaces.</div><div><br></div><div>We will spend a good part of our morning at Westwood doing some service projects around the church. We want to serve Craig Hoxie by aiding him in some projects, and also do some painting in the upstairs hallway of the old building. Students will need to bring some work clothes for this.</div><div><br></div><div>We will wrap up by having lunch together, and you can plan to pick your student(s) up at the church at 1pm. </div><div><br></div><div>The cost per student will be $15. This will go toward food for meals that we will provide, snacks, as well as to offset the cost of some of the supplies we will need for Saturday.</div><div><br></div><div>Hope that many of our students will be able to come and join us! If you can't make it Friday night to the game, you can either come to the church afterward, probably around 10:30pm, or Saturday morning before 9.</div>Momentum Student Ministryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02894973050592034351noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5508521597013772518.post-71691150594261513452013-10-03T08:09:00.001-07:002013-10-03T08:09:07.614-07:00Fall RetreatWe are having a Fall Retreat on October 11th & 12th!<br />
<br />
I apologize for not getting details out sooner to parents for this. We are really trying to do well about putting events on the calendar and get that information out to everyone in a timely fashion. It is a process, and I am thankful for a team who is helping me do both of those better. Although I feel we are doing the former much better, we are still struggling with the latter. So, I apologize, but also promise that we are trying to do better at that. In fact, we are wanting to have a big parents meeting in the next little bit. Stay tuned for that.<br />
<br />
Anyway, we have discussed this some on Sunday nights with the students, but I am very aware that those announcements rarely (if ever) actually make it home to the parents! :) So, here is the information, and I hope that all of our students will be able to be a part of the weekend!<br />
<br />
Our retreat will be Disciple Now style, which means a couple of things.<br />
<br />
First, it means that all students will be staying in Westwood members' homes in small groups (of like age and gender, of course). Students will stay two nights, both Friday and Saturday nights. Snacks and breakfast will be provided for the students in those homes. Doing two nights is different this year, but we are doing this for a couple of reasons. First, it allows more small group interaction with each other and with the NGU students. Second, it allows us to make sure that all of our students get to Sunday School and church on Sunday morning. We have seen a trend of more and more students choosing to 'recover' from the weekend and not showing up to church.<br />
<br />
Second, it means that we will have a good mix of large group worship times and small group discussion. I always love these weekends because of this excellent mix of interaction with God's Word and each other.<br />
<br />
We are having a group of students from North Greenville come up again this year and help us lead. They did a tremendous job last year, and I am confident this will be the case again this year. By the way, if your student is in High School, this would be an excellent opportunity to find out more about what I consider the best Christian University anywhere! These students would love to have those types of conversations with both students and parents!<br />
<br />
Since we are having this retreat here at home, the cost is low. We are charging each student just $25, most of which will go toward providing food.<br />
<br />
On top of that, we are going to take all students to the Person High School football game on Friday evening. We will meet at the church at 5pm and plan to leave for the game around 5:30. Students will need money to get into the game and any extra money for snacks/food.<br />
<br />
Some of our day on Saturday will be spent serving our own body at Westwood! We have identified some work that needs to be done around the church, so we want to do as much of that as we can. We will also be doing some other activities. We will have a final itinerary available this Sunday night (it will be put here on the blog, too, in case you can't make it).<br />
<br />
As always, shoot me any questions you may have. If your student needs to come and go for good reasons, we can make sure we accommodate. Thanks!!Momentum Student Ministryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02894973050592034351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5508521597013772518.post-68761317418707510622013-09-09T11:58:00.001-07:002013-09-09T11:58:15.244-07:003 Story TrainingI had posted several days ago (and communicated to the students the past couple of weeks) that we are teaming up with YFC to offer our students their 3 Story Training (Evangelism Training). I shared with the students last night just how important this training is, mostly for vision and strategy we want to implement (with other churches in Person County) to intentionally reach students in our community. I am attempting to cast a vision to not only our students, but other churches as well.<div><br></div><div>I believe that we (churches & ministries) have relied on a "scatter gun" approach in Person County for too long when it comes to outreach, evangelism and discipleship to students in our community. What I mean is, I really don't know what other churches & student ministries in our area are doing to reach and disciple students. I do know that I continue to hear about little things taking place from different directions, but never see anything with great substance. Often I hear of things that started, but fizzled out. I'm also quite sure that very few of our sister churches know what we are doing at Westwood in that mission. What I do know is that there are hundreds and hundreds of students in our county that do not know Jesus and are not in church. </div><div><br></div><div>It has become clear to me that a comprehensive approach that includes many churches around a common strategy could offer a powerful opportunity for partnership and the advancement of the gospel among young people in our county. God has given our area churches a wonderful partner/tool in YFC, who I believe may hold the key to bringing about that unity in mission. I have met with a couple of YFC'ers who have shared some of those exciting tools with me. The first is this 3 Story Evangelism strategy. The second, and built upon that foundation, is called Friend 2 Friend groups. Now, I want to be clear. These tools comprise a strategy that is one among thousands of well thought out strategies. But, the more I think about it, the more I have come to realize this: it's not so much about the strategy, or whose strategy is better! As long as the strategy is based on God's Word and faithful to his mission, it can be a rallying point for many to join together in the work of the gospel.</div><div><br></div><div>After all, that is what YFC is...not a church, but a gift to local churches to provide partnership and to undergird the mission of the church! So, I would like to see several churches join together for the common mission to which we are called, specifically geared toward reaching the students of our context. I believe YFC has offered a wonderful tool to aid that vision.</div><div><br></div><div>So, I would like to see Westwood be leaders in not only casting this vision, but living it. In order to do that, we must be willing to take the lead in doing what we are calling others to join us in doing. Therefore, I would like for all of our students to go through the 3 Story evangelism training, followed by forming Friend 2 Friend small groups. These small groups are set up to be groups of 3-6 believers who get together once a week for a short interaction wherein they read the Word together and offer accountability to reach their friends and peers with the gospel. (Groups will include students who share the same school context so meetings are easily scheduled and maintained)</div><div><br></div><div>I had written some days ago that our plan was to offer the 3 Story training this next weekend, September 14th (9am-2pm) and 15th (2-8pm). However, I understand that Saturdays are difficult with so much other life going on. I spoke with Amy Edlund this morning for a bit about this issue. After some conversation, we have decided to instead try to make the whole training as accessible as possible for our students. In order to do this, we will instead try to offer the training over the next 3 weeks at a time where students are used to coming to Westwood (Sunday evenings), though with a slightly earlier meeting time. The 3 Story training is intensive and comprehensive, meaning that participants must do their best to be a part of 100% of the training. So, in order to make this more doable, we propose the following schedule for the next 3 weeks:</div><div><br></div><div>Sunday, September 15th - 4-8pm</div><div>Sunday, September 22nd - 5-8pm</div><div>Sunday, September 29th - 5-8pm</div><div><br></div><div>Because of the earlier meeting times, we will provide supper for the students on these nights. We will also make it a HIGH priority to be finished and students leaving right at 8pm. We realize these are school nights and do not wish to keep students too late and cause any strain in that way.</div><div><br></div><div>This training, although intensive, is a lot of fun and offers the students an opportunity to interact and be involved. I just ask you to please strongly consider being a part of this time. This training is great for not only students, but adults as well! Parents are more than welcome to come and be a part of it...we will actually have the need arise for leaders who have been trained in this way as the future unfolds. So, the more people trained the better! Please also note that this training is for all students, whether they attend a public school, a Christian school, or are homeschooled. It is my prayer that all of our students would be trained and that they would all be a part of a Friend 2 Friend group beginning in October.</div><div><br></div><div>This change in schedule, of course, will mean that our new schedule that I offered on Facebook last night will not go into affect until the first Sunday in October. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Striving for this kind of strategy and offering this type of training in this day and time is almost excruciating to schedule! So, again, this plan to provide the training over the next 3 Sundays is simply an attempt to make it as accessible as possible to everyone. Will you please respond to this post? Will you please just let me know (text, phone call, email, facebook) if you or your student(s) will be able to participate during the times we have scheduled? This will help us, especially this first week, in knowing how many people to expect and how to prepare.</div>Momentum Student Ministryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02894973050592034351noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5508521597013772518.post-20022066390519397142013-08-10T07:14:00.001-07:002013-08-10T07:15:17.644-07:00Fall Calendar Update<div style="font-family: Helvetica; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">Hey all!
